The verse frames a foundational philosophical inquiry: understanding the ultimate cause of creation and the final ground into which all existence dissolves. It sets up a teaching on first principles—origin, sustenance, and dissolution—often used to orient ethical life (dharma) within a larger cosmic order.
Narada respectfully questions a Brahman sage about cosmology: the source of the universe (including all immovable and movable beings) and its destination at pralaya (cosmic dissolution). This initiates an explanatory discourse that follows.
