Adhyāya 240: Indriya–Manas–Buddhi–Ātman — The Inner Hierarchy and Restraint (इन्द्रिय-मनस्-बुद्धि-आत्म-क्रमः)

सत्त्वसंसेवनाद धीरो निद्रामुच्छेत्तुमरहति । विद्वानोंने योगके जो काम

sattvasaṃsevanād dhīro nidrām ucchettum arhati | vidvān yoge ye kāma-krodha-lobha-bhayaṃ ca pañcamaṃ svapnam—ime pañca doṣā uktās teṣāṃ pūrṇatayā ucchedaṃ kuryāt | eṣu krodhaṃ śamena (manonigrahena) jayet, kāmaṃ saṅkalpatyāgena parājayet, tathā dhīraḥ sattvaguṇasaṃsevanena nidrāyā ucchedaṃ kartum arhati ||

व्यास ने कहा— सत्त्व का सेवन करने से धीर पुरुष निद्रा का उच्छेद करने योग्य हो जाता है। योग-मार्ग में विद्वानों ने पाँच दोष बताए हैं— काम, क्रोध, लोभ, भय और पाँचवाँ स्वप्न; इनका मूल से नाश करना चाहिए। इनमें क्रोध को शम (मनोनिग्रह) से जीतना है और काम को संकल्प-त्याग से पराजित करना है। सत्त्व के पोषण से स्थिरचित्त पुरुष निद्रा का अंत कर देता है।
