Duryodhana’s Post-Duel Lament and Instructions (भग्नसक्थस्य विलापः)
etat sarvaṃ tu vijñāya hy ātmadoṣakṛtaṃ phalam
The verse emphasizes moral causality: outcomes are often the ‘fruit’ of one’s own faults. It encourages accountability and self-scrutiny rather than attributing everything to external forces or destiny.
In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a character (not named in this half-verse) comes to a clear understanding of events and interprets the result as arising from personal wrongdoing—marking a moment of recognition and ethical evaluation within the war narrative.
