तस्मिन् विमर्दे रथवाजिनागै- स्तदाभिघातैर्दलिते हि भूतले । ततस्तु पातालतले शयानो नागो<श्वसेन: कृतवैरोडर्जुनेन

tasmin vimarde rathavājināgais tadābhighātair dalite hi bhūtale |
tatastu pātālatale śayāno nāgo 'śvasenaḥ kṛtavairo 'rjunena rājan |
संजय बोले—राजन्! उस घमासान में, जब रथों, घोड़ों और हाथियों के प्रहारों से भूतल कुचला जा रहा था, तब पाताल-तल में पड़ा हुआ अश्वसेन नामक नाग—जिसने अर्जुन से वैर बाँध रखा था—उन आघातों से उद्वेलित हो उठा। कर्ण और अर्जुन के उस संग्राम को देखकर वह बड़े वेग से ऊपर उठा और युद्धस्थल में आ पहुँचा; क्योंकि उसमें उड़ने की भी शक्ति थी, और वह अपने प्राचीन वैर का अवसर खोज रहा था।
