Karna Reproves Shalya; Brahmin Reports on Bāhlīkas; Shalya’s Universalizing Rebuttal

tad idaṃ tava kārya tu dūraprāptaṃ vijānatā | na kṛtaṃ yat tvayā pūrvaṃ prāptāprāptavicāraṇam ||

Educational Q&A

Before acting—especially in matters of power and justice—one must deliberate on dharma (right and wrong) and on realistic outcomes (what is attainable vs. unattainable). Knowing an act is both unethical and unlikely to succeed, yet proceeding anyway, is presented as a grave failure of judgment.

Sanjaya addresses the Kuru king (implicitly Dhṛtarāṣṭra) and criticizes the earlier decision to seize the Pāṇḍavas’ kingdom. He points out that the king did not properly reflect beforehand on the moral legitimacy and practical feasibility of that action, a lapse that underlies the unfolding catastrophe of war.
