अनर्हमाणान् कौन्तेयान् कर्मणस्तस्य तत् फलम् | मैंने अमर्षमें भरकर सदा कष्ट भोगनेके अयोग्य कुन्तीकुमारोंको क्लेश ही दिया है; परंतु मेरे इस बर्तावको द्रोणाचार्यने चुपचाप सह लिया था। उनके उसी कर्मका यह वधरूपी फल प्राप्त हुआ है

अनर्ह कुन्तीपुत्रों को मैंने दीर्घकाल तक अपने भीतर सुलगते अमर्ष से केवल कष्ट ही दिया। द्रोणाचार्य ने मेरे उस आचरण को मौन रहकर सह लिया था; आज युद्ध के बीच उनका वध मुझे उसी पाप-कर्म का कठोर फल प्रतीत होता है, जो लौटकर मेरे सामने आ खड़ा हुआ है।
