कर्णाटका महिषका विकल्पा मूषकास्तथा । झिल्लिका: कुन्तलाश्वैव सौहदा नभकानना:
karṇāṭakā mahiṣakā vikalpā mūṣakās tathā | jhillikāḥ kuntalāś caiva sauhadā nabhakānanāḥ ||
संजय बोले—दक्षिण के लोगों में कर्णाटक, महिषक, विकल्प और मूषक; तथा झिल्लिक, कुन्तल, सौहृद और नभकानन-प्रदेश के निवासी भी थे। इस प्रकार दक्षिणापथ के अनेक जनपदों का उल्लेख करके महाकाव्य दिखाता है कि कुरुक्षेत्र का युद्ध अखिल-भारतीय राजनीतिक संबंधों तक फैला हुआ था और उसका नैतिक भार भी उतना ही व्यापक था।
