Bhīṣma checks Bhīmasena; matched engagements intensify
bhuṅkṣvemāṃ pṛthivīṃ rājan bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sukhī | durhṛdastāpayan sarvān nandayaṃś cāpi bāndhavān ||
Bhīṣma frames ideal kingship as the balanced exercise of power: protect and strengthen one’s own side (brothers and kinsmen), bring joy and stability to allies, and firmly restrain hostile forces—so that rule is both effective and socially sustaining.
Bhīṣma addresses a king with counsel on governance: he urges him to rule the earth in unity with his brothers, maintaining prosperity at home while subduing enemies and supporting relatives and allies.
