एकाल्ा निर्दहेद् भीष्म: पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम्
sañjaya uvāca | ekālaṃ nirdahen bhīṣmaḥ pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm, jighāṃsantaṃ yudhāṃ śreṣṭha tadā āsīt tumulaṃ mahat |
संजय बोले—राजन्! योद्धाओं में श्रेष्ठ भीष्म मानो एक ही दिन में पाण्डवों की पूरी सेना को जला डालने में समर्थ थे। जब पाण्डव उस श्रेष्ठ योद्धा को मारने की इच्छा से उन पर टूट पड़े, तब उस क्षण वहाँ महान् और भयंकर तुमुल युद्ध छिड़ गया। यह दृश्य युद्ध के धर्म-संकट को भी दिखाता है—प्रतिज्ञाबद्ध पूज्य पितामह के सामने भी रणधर्म दोनों पक्षों को अनवरत, नियति-तुल्य हिंसा की ओर ढकेल देता है।
