ततो नृपा: समाजहुस्तनूनि च मृदूनि च । उपधानानि मुख्यानि नैच्छत् तानि पितामह:
tato nṛpāḥ samājahus tanūni ca mṛdūni ca | upadhānāni mukhyāni naicchat tāni pitāmahaḥ ||
तब राजाओं ने उत्तम, कोमल और महीन वस्त्रों के बने हुए बहुत-से तकिये ला दिए; परन्तु पितामह भीष्म ने उन्हें स्वीकार करना नहीं चाहा।
संजय उवाच
Bhīṣma’s refusal of luxurious comfort highlights steadfastness in dharma and self-discipline: even in pain he maintains the austerity and dignity expected of a great kṣatriya elder, valuing principle over ease.
After Bhīṣma has fallen and lies suffering, the surrounding kings bring fine, soft pillows to ease him; Bhīṣma declines them, choosing to endure without accepting such comforts.
