Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda)

Ritual Type: Parvana

Beneficiary: Pitr

Timing: Within the first year after father’s death, specifically when an eclipse occurs (grahaṇa-kāla).

Concept: Kāla-niyama (time-restriction) in śrāddha: during the first year after the father’s death, an eclipse-time does not authorize parvaṇa or nāndīmukha śrāddha by sons.

Vedantic Theme: Dharma as alignment with kāla and niyama; ritual order supports inner steadiness (śānti) and social-cosmic harmony.

Application: If an eclipse occurs within the first year after a father’s death, avoid performing parvaṇa-śrāddha and nāndīmukha-śrāddha; consult śāstra/purohita for permissible substitutes (e.g., japa, dāna, snāna) if needed.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka

Type: household/ritual setting; sky-event (eclipse) context

Related Themes: Garuda Purana Śrāddha rules on kāla (tithi, grahaṇa) and first-year restrictions; distinctions between parvaṇa, ekoddiṣṭa, nāndīmukha

FAQs

This verse states that if an eclipse occurs within the first year after the father’s death, certain scheduled śrāddhas (parvaṇa and nāndīmukha) are to be avoided by the sons, indicating ritual timing is regulated for correctness.

By regulating rites during the first-year period after death, the verse reflects the text’s emphasis on proper post-death observances (preta-related duties) that support orderly ancestral transitions, even though it does not describe the journey directly.

If following Garuda Purana–based ritual practice, consult a qualified priest/panchāṅga for eclipse periods and observe the restriction on performing parvaṇa and nāndīmukha śrāddhas within the first year after a father’s death.
