Sapindīkaraṇa: Timing, Eligibility, Gotra Rules, and Yearlong Śrāddha
with Vṛṣotsarga and Ghaṭa-dāna
anutpannaśarīrasya na dānaṃ pitṛbhiḥ saha / etaiḥ ṣoḍaśabhiḥ śrāddhaiḥ preto muktastu jāyate
Lord Vishnu (in dialogue instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)

This verse states that the set of sixteen śrāddha rites specifically serves to release the departed from the preta-condition, completing the required transitional rites.
It implies a transitional phase where the departed is a preta with an unformed (ritually incomplete) post-death embodiment, and that proper śrāddha observances are the means to move beyond that condition.
Perform post-death rites in the prescribed sequence and with correct intention—distinguishing preta-related rites from Pitṛ offerings—so the rituals align with their intended purpose.
