indra uvāca | kuśalaṃ vo dvijaśreṣṭhā anihotreṣu kṛtsnaśaḥ | tapaścaryāsu sarvāsu vedābhyāse tathā śrute
Indra
Scene: Indra respectfully addresses a gathered assembly of senior brāhmaṇas, asking after their welfare in rites, austerities, and Vedic learning; the scene emphasizes mutual reverence rather than hierarchy.
True dharma is measured by steady discipline—tapas, right conduct, and reverent study of Veda and śruti.
This verse sets the dialogue frame; the specific tīrtha is developed in the immediately following verses of the same adhyāya.
It references anihotra-related observances and emphasizes Vedic study and austerities rather than giving a new injunction.
