Educational Q&A

Even when pursuing peace with adversaries, one should not erase or ignore grave wrongdoing; ethical diplomacy requires clear memory of injustice so that reconciliation does not become complicity or forgetfulness.

In the Udyoga Parva’s lead-up to war and negotiations, the speaker points to Duḥśāsana’s past offense against the addressed ‘lotus-eyed’ figure, urging that this outrage be remembered while considering any treaty with the opposing side.
