Educational Q&A

Even when one has strong claims, dharma favors restraint and reconciliation: Yudhiṣṭhira asks only for a minimal share—five villages for five brothers—so that peace with relatives may be maintained and war averted.

During the pre-war negotiations in the Udyoga Parva, Yudhiṣṭhira voices a compromise to Duryodhana (Suyodhana), conveyed in the diplomatic context involving Sañjaya, proposing that granting five villages would secure peace among the Kauravas and Pāṇḍavas.
