Udyoga Parva Adhyaya 133 — A Mother’s Counsel to Saṃjaya

ahaṃ mahākule jātā hradād hradam ivāgatā | īśvarī sarvakalyāṇī bhartrāṃ paramapūjitā ||

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds ideals of social and marital dharma: noble birth, rightful transition into a new household, and the ethical expectation of mutual honor—especially the wife’s recognized dignity and auspicious role within the royal order.

A speaker (marked ‘putra uvāca’ in the edition) voices a woman’s self-description: she recalls her noble origin, her coming into another domain like a swan moving between lakes, and her elevated status as sovereign lady—honored by her husband and endowed with auspicious qualities.
