केनैष धर्म: कथितो देवेन ऋषिणापि वा
Janamejaya uvāca | kenaiṣa dharmaḥ kathito devena ṛṣiṇāpi vā, bhagavan? asya bhaktirūpasya dharmasya kaḥ devatā vā ṛṣiḥ vā upadeṣṭā? ananya-bhaktānāṃ jīvanacaryā kā? sa ca kadā prācīnaḥ pravṛttaḥ? mama saṃśayaṃ nivāraya; etad-viṣayaṃ śrotuṃ mama manasi mahān autkaṇṭhyaḥ ||
જનમેજયે કહ્યું— “ભગવન્! આ ધર્મ કોણે કહ્યો—કોઈ દેવતાએ કે કોઈ ઋષિએ? ભક્તિ-રૂપ આ ધર્મનો પ્રથમ ઉપદેશક કોણ હતો? અનન્ય ભક્તોની જીવનચર્યા કેવી છે, અને આ પરંપરા ક્યારેથી પ્રચલિત છે? કૃપા કરીને મારો સંશય દૂર કરો; આ વિષય સાંભળવા માટે મારું મન અત્યંત ઉત્કંઠિત છે।”
