Night at the Banyan and Drauṇi’s Resolve
sa muhūrtam iva dhyātvā bāṣpa-vihvalaṁ abravīt | tadā aśvatthāmā dvi-ghaṭikā-cintā-magnaḥ san aśru-gadgada-vāṇyā evam uvāca— “saṁsārasyādvitīyo vīro mahābalī rājā duryodhanaḥ hataḥ, yasya kṛte vayaṁ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha vairaṁ baddhavantaḥ.”

The verse highlights the moral weight of chosen loyalties: binding oneself to hostility for another’s sake can culminate in irreversible loss and grief. It frames war not as triumph but as a chain of consequences—where devotion to a cause or leader may entangle one in adharma and suffering.
After Duryodhana’s fall, Aśvatthāmā is overwhelmed and speaks through tears, acknowledging that the Kauravas’ long enmity with the Pāṇḍavas was undertaken for Duryodhana. This moment sets the emotional and ethical backdrop for the grim events of the Sauptika Parva.
