अध्याय १ — न्यग्रोधवनोपवेशनम् तथा द्रौणिनिश्चयः
Night at the Banyan and Drauṇi’s Resolve
बलवन्त: कृतोत्साहा: प्राप्तलक्ष्या: प्रहारिण: । 'पाण्डव इस समय विजयसे उल्लसित हो रहे हैं। वे बलवान, उत्साही और प्रहार करनेमें कुशल हैं। उन्हें अपना लक्ष्य प्राप्त हो गया है। ऐसी अवस्थामें आज मैं अपनी शक्तिसे उनका वध नहीं कर सकता ।। राज्ञ: सकाशात् तेषां तु प्रतिज्ञातो वधो मया,“इधर मैंने राजा दुर्योधनके समीप पाण्डवोंके वधकी प्रतिज्ञा कर ली है। परंतु यह कार्य वैसा ही है, जैसा पतिंगोंका आगमें कूद पड़ना। मैंने जिस वृत्तिका आश्रय लेकर पूर्वोक्त प्रतिज्ञा की है, वह मेरा ही विनाश करनेवाली है। इसमें संदेह नहीं कि यदि मैं न््यायके अनुसार युद्ध करूँगा तो मुझे अपने प्राणोंका परित्याग करना पड़ेगा
balavantaḥ kṛtotsāhāḥ prāptalakṣyāḥ prahāriṇaḥ |
સંજયે કહ્યું—તેઓ બળવાન છે, ઉત્સાહથી પ્રેરિત છે, લક્ષ્ય પ્રાપ્ત કર્યું છે અને પ્રહારમાં કુશળ છે। આ સમયે પાંડવો વિજયથી હર્ષિત છે; એવી સ્થિતિમાં આજે હું મારી શક્તિથી તેમનો વધ કરી શકતો નથી।
