Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the tragic ethical weight of war: the deepest sorrow arises when circumstances force one into a deadly confrontation with a formidable opponent, where honor and duty drive combatants to risk life without restraint.

The speaker (as framed by Vaiśampāyana) expresses anguish at the prospect of an imminent battle: if a confrontation occurs, the opponent will fight with extreme intensity, even to the point of sacrificing life, and this prospect is described as the greatest possible grief.
