Shloka 36

ऐसा कहकर विशाल ब्रह्मतेज धारण करनेवाले देवर्षि-प्रवर नारद आकाशमें जाकर सहसा अन्तर्धान हो गये ।।

vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca |

vidurasya vacaḥ śrutvā nāgarasya giraṃ ca vai |

bhūyo mumūha śokāc ca dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ sabāndhavaḥ ||

tato duryodhanaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniś cāpi saubalaḥ |

droṇaṃ dvīpam amanyanta rājyaṃ cāsmai nyavedayan ||

વૈશમ્પાયને કહ્યું—વિદુરનાં વચનો અને નગરજનોનો વિલાપ સાંભળીને ધૃતરાષ્ટ્ર સગાં-સંબંધીઓ સહિત શોકથી મોહગ્રસ્ત થઈ ફરી મૂર્છિત થયો. ત્યારબાદ દુર્યોધન, કર્ણ અને સુબલપુત્ર શકુનિએ દ્રોણાચાર્યને પોતાનો ‘દ્વીપ’—અર્થાત્ નિર્ભય આશ્રય—માની સમગ્ર રાજ્ય તેમના ચરણોમાં અર્પણ કરી તેમને જ સોંપી દીધું.

Public conscience recognizes adharma: the citizens’ lament and Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s grief show an awareness that injustice has been done to the Pāṇḍavas. Yet the Kaurava faction responds not with restitution but with consolidation—seeking institutional strength (Droṇa) to secure power. The verse highlights how moral insight can be eclipsed by political expediency.

After Vidura reports the citizens’ sorrow at the Pāṇḍavas’ departure to the forest, Dhṛtarāṣṭra is overcome by grief and loses composure again. Immediately afterward, Duryodhana, Karṇa, and Śakuni treat Droṇa as their dependable support and formally entrust the kingdom to him, tightening their control of the state.
