भीष्म उवाच न धर्मसौक्ष्म्यात् सुभगे विवेक्तु शवनोमि ते प्रश्नमिम॑ यथावत् । अस्वाम्यशक्त: पणितुं परस्वं स्त्रियाश्व भर्तुर्वशतां समीक्ष्य
bhīṣma uvāca | na dharmasaukṣmyāt subhage vivektuṃ śaknomi te praśnam imaṃ yathāvat | asvāmy-aśaktaḥ paṇituṃ parasvaṃ striyāś ca bhartur vaśatāṃ samīkṣya ||
ભીષ્મે કહ્યું—સુભાગ્યવતી, ધર્મનું સ્વરૂપ અત્યંત સૂક્ષ્મ છે; તેથી તારા આ પ્રશ્નનું યથાવત્ અને સંપૂર્ણ વિશ્લેષણ હું કરી શકતો નથી. જે સાચો સ્વામી નથી તેને પરધન દાવ પર મૂકવાનો અધિકાર નથી; પરંતુ પરંપરાથી સ્ત્રીને પતિના વશમાં ગણવામાં આવે છે. આ પરસ્પર વિરોધી સિદ્ધાંતો વિચારતાં હું નિશ્ચિત નિર્ણય આપી શકતો નથી.
