मुक्तस्त्वयाहं त्वसमीक्ष्य कर्ण शिरो हूतं यन्न मयार्जुनस्य | समीक्ष्य मां मुड्च रणे त्वमाशु हन्तास्मि शत्रुं तव चात्मनश्ल,“कर्ण! तुमने अच्छी तरह सोच-विचारकर मुझे नहीं छोड़ा था; इसीलिये मैं अर्जुनके मस्तकका अपहरण न कर सका। अब पुनः सोच-समझकर, ठीकसे निशाना साधकर रणभूमिमें शीघ्र ही मुझे छोड़ो, तब मैं अपने और तुम्हारे उस शत्रुका वध कर डालूँगा'

muktas tvayāhaṃ tv asamīkṣya karṇa śiro hūtaṃ yan na mayārjunasya |
samīkṣya māṃ muñca raṇe tvam āśu hantāsmi śatruṃ tava cātmanaś ca ||
સંજય બોલ્યા— તે બોલ્યો, “કર્ણ! તું મને યોગ્ય રીતે નિશાન સાધ્યા વિના છોડ્યો; તેથી હું અર્જુનનું મસ્તક હરી ન શક્યો. હવે વિચાર કરીને, સાચું નિશાન સાધીને રણમાં તુરંત મને છોડ; તો હું તારો અને મારો તે શત્રુ સંહાર કરી દઈશ.”
