Karṇa’s Consecration as Commander-in-Chief
mitravarmā ca pāuñcālyaḥ kṣatradharmā ca bhārata
The verse underscores kṣatriya identity through naming: warriors are remembered as bearers of martial duty (kṣatra-dharma). In the epic’s ethical frame, such catalogues highlight how personal fame, lineage, and obligation converge in war, even as the larger narrative questions the cost of that duty.
Sañjaya is reporting to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, listing warriors present/engaged in the battle during the Karṇa Parva. This line names Mitravarmā, a Pāñcāla warrior, and Kṣatradharmā, continuing the enumeration of combatants.
