व्यूहं व्यूह्या महेष्वासो मकरं शत्रुतापन: । प्रत्युद्ययौ तथा कर्ण: पाण्डवान् विजिगीषया,तत्पश्चात् शत्रुओंको संताप देनेवाला महाधनुर्थर कर्ण पाण्डवोंको जीत लेनेकी इच्छासे अपनी सेनाका मकर-व्यूह बनाकर आगे बढ़ा

vyūhaṃ vyūhyā maheṣvāso makaraṃ śatrutāpanaḥ |
pratyudyayau tathā karṇaḥ pāṇḍavān vijigīṣayā ||
સંજય બોલ્યા—શત્રુઓને સંતાપ આપનાર મહાધનુર્ધર કર્ણે પોતાની સેના ‘મકર-વ્યૂહ’માં ગોઠવી, પાંડવોને જીતવાની ઇચ્છાથી આગળ વધીને તેમનો સામનો કર્યો. તેમાં તેની સુચિત રણનીતિ અને વિજયસંકલ્પ પ્રગટ થયો.
