विनिर्ययौ केतुमता रथेन नरर्षभ: श्वेतहयेन वीर: । वरूथिना सैन्यमुखे महात्मा वधे धृत: सर्वसपत्नयूनाम्‌,तदनन्तर नरश्रेष्ठ महामना वीर अर्जुन समस्त शत्रुपक्षीय युवकोंके वधका संकल्प लेकर शत घोड़ोंसे जुते हुए ध्वज एवं आवरणसे युक्त रथपर आरूढ़ हो शत्रुसेनाके सामने चले स द्रौणिमिषुणैकेन विद्ध्वा शल्यं च पठ्चभि: | ध्वजं सांयमनेश्वैव सोडष्टाभिश्षिच्छिदे तत: उसने अभ्वत्थामाको एक और शल्यको पाँच बाणोंसे घायल करके शलके ध्वजको आठ बाणोंसे काट डाला

sañjaya uvāca |

viniryayau ketumatā rathena nararṣabhaḥ śvetahayena vīraḥ |

varūthinā sainyamukhe mahātmā vadhe dhṛtaḥ sarvasapatnayūnām ||

tad-anantaraṃ narśreṣṭhaḥ mahāmanā vīra arjunaḥ samasta-śatru-pakṣīya-yuvakānāṃ vadha-saṅkalpaṃ kṛtvā śata-ghoḍaiḥ yuktam dhvaja-āvaraṇa-yuktaṃ rathaṃ samāruhya śatru-senāyāḥ sammukhaṃ yayau |

sa drauṇim iṣuṇā ekena viddhvā śalyaṃ ca pañcabhiḥ |

dhvajaṃ sāyamaneshu eva ṣoḍaśābhiḥ ciccheda tataḥ ||

સંજય બોલ્યા—પછી નરશ્રેષ્ઠ વીર અર્જુન ધ્વજવાળા, શ્વેત અશ્વોથી જોડાયેલા રથ પર આરૂઢ થયો; કવચધારી મહાત્મા બની શત્રુપક્ષના સર્વ યુવાન યોદ્ધાઓના વિનાશનો સંકલ્પ કરીને સેનાના મોખરે આગળ વધ્યો. તેણે દ્રોણપુત્ર અશ્વત્થામાને એક બાણથી વિંધ્યો, શલ્યને પાંચ બાણોથી ઘાયલ કર્યો અને પછી સોળ બાણોથી શલ્યનો ધ્વજ કાપી પાડી દીધો.
