नवमेघप्रतीकाशाश्षाक्षिप्य तुरगान् गजा: । पादैरेव विमृद्नन्ति मत्ता: कनकभूषणा:,नूतन मेघोंके समान शोभा पानेवाले स्वर्णभूषित मतवाले हाथी बहुत-से घोड़ोंको सूँड्ोंस झटककर पैरोंसे ही रौंद डालते थे

navameghapratīkāśāḥ kṣipya turagān gajāḥ |
pādair eva vimṛdnanti mattāḥ kanakabhūṣaṇāḥ ||
સંજય બોલ્યા—નવા મેઘો જેવા દેખાતા, સ્વર્ણાભૂષણોથી શોભિત મત્ત ગજો ઘોડાઓને ઝાટકી દૂર ફેંકી દેતા અને પગથી જ રુંધી નાખતા. એ દૃશ્ય યુદ્ધની અંધ, નિર્લિપ્ત પ્રચંડતા બતાવતું હતું—જ્યાં જીવંત પ્રાણીઓ વિનાશના સાધન બની જાય છે.
