Marutta Seeks a Priest: Bṛhaspati’s Refusal and Nārada’s Guidance to Saṃvarta
Chapter 6
tam ahaṁ yaṣṭum icchāmi sambhārāḥ sambhṛtāś ca me | yājyo 'smi bhavataḥ sādho tat prāptuṁ hi vidhatsva ca ||
The verse highlights dharmic order in ritual life: a yajña is not merely personal desire but a disciplined act requiring proper preparation (sambhāra) and guidance from a qualified officiant/elder. It underscores humility and reliance on rightful procedure rather than impulsive action.
A speaker (introduced as Vyāsa in the edition’s heading) voices the intention to begin a sacrifice, stating that all requisites have been assembled, and requests a respected person addressed as “sādho” to officiate/arrange the rite so it may be properly carried out.
