(Praise of Abstention from Meat) / Ethics of Ahiṃsā in Diet and Rite
annasya hi pradānena naro raudraṃ na sevate | tasmād annaṃ pradātavyam anyāya-parivarjitam ||
Food-giving (anna-dāna) is presented as a powerful dharmic act that protects one from dreadful suffering; however, the gift must be ethically sourced—charity should be made from resources acquired without injustice.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma and gifts, Yudhiṣṭhira speaks about the spiritual and moral value of donating food, emphasizing that the merit of giving depends not only on the act but also on the just means by which the food was obtained.
