Concept: Beings enter darkness according to degrees (tāratamya) of deeds; saṃsāra itself is a darkened condition where over-deliberation cannot undo consequences.
Vedantic Theme: Avidyā as darkness; karmic gradation; the futility of mere intellectualization without right living and right orientation.
Application: Reduce ‘darkness’ by cultivating discernment (viveka), ethical action, and devotion; avoid procrastinating reform through endless rationalization.
Primary Rasa: bibhatsa
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Type: dark realm/void-like zone

This verse uses “blinding darkness” as an image for the post-death and worldly consequence of sinful or ignorant conduct, emphasizing that karma leads to states of deeper or lesser obscuration.
It states that beings enter darkness “by gradation,” implying that the soul’s experience after death is not uniform but proportionate to the quality and intensity of one’s actions.
Act in ways that reduce tamas—avoid harmful deeds, cultivate clarity and dharma—because consequences unfold in graded forms, not randomly.
