Sri Krishna (as narrated by Sage Parāśara to Maitreya)
Here lajjā marks social convention and self-conscious restraint; Krishna tests whether the gopīs’ devotion is governed by worldly norms or by single-minded bhakti.
In the narrative flow, Parāśara presents Krishna’s speech as a spiritual examination: when devotion is steady and pure, excessive calculation loses its necessity compared to surrender.
The verse frames Krishna as the supreme object of devotion who can both command and refine the devotee’s heart, showing Vishnu’s sovereignty even within intimate līlā.
