The Burning Tail and the Parade through Laṅkā
सर्वेषामेव पर्याप्तो राक्षसानामहं युधि।।5.53.13।।किंतु रामस्य प्रीत्यर्थं विषहिष्येऽहमीदृशम्।लङ्का चारयितव्या वै पुनरेव भवेदिति।।5.53.14।।
sarveṣām eva paryāpto rākṣasānām ahaṁ yudhi | kiṁtu rāmasya prītyarthaṁ viṣahiṣye ’ham īdṛśam ||5.53.13||
Au combat, je suffirais à moi seul pour affronter tous ces rākṣasas ; pourtant, pour la joie de Rāma, j’endurerai une telle humiliation.
'I am strong enough to destroy all the demons in a battle. I am enduring this humiliation in order to make Rama happy. In this way I will get a chance to see Lanka once again.
Dharma as devoted service: one may endure personal insult when it advances a righteous cause and honors one’s duty to a just leader.
Though able to defeat the rākṣasas, Hanumān chooses to tolerate being bound to better serve Rāma’s broader objective.
