Lakshmana Consoles Rama on Fate, Fortitude, and Right Action
महर्षिर्यो वसिष्ठस्तु यः पितुर्नः पुरोहितः।अह्ना पुत्रशतं जज्ञे तथैवास्य पुनर्हतम्।।3.66.8।।
maharṣir yo vasiṣṭhas tu yaḥ pitur naḥ purohitaḥ |
ahnā putraśataṁ jajñe tathaivāsya punar hatam || 3.66.8 ||
Même le grand rishi Vasiṣṭha—prêtre de notre père—engendra cent fils en un seul jour ; et de la même manière, ils furent de nouveau mis à mort.
It is the go of the world. Yayati, son of Nahusa, shared heaven with Indra but because of his curse (for his bad conduct) suffered misfortune.
Dharma includes endurance amid inevitable loss: even the most venerable experience tragedy; one must still uphold right conduct.
Lakshmana cites Vasistha’s immense bereavement to help Rama frame his own suffering.
