Ô douce Sītā, les petits faons qui se fiaient à toi et jouaient avec toi—à présent, privés de ta présence, ils te contemplent en pensée, les yeux baignés de larmes.
O gentle Sita! those fawns who trusted you and played with you, are now separated from you. Brooding over you, their eyes are brimming with tears.
Dharma is compassion that extends beyond humans: Sītā’s gentleness created bonds even with forest creatures, and their sorrow underscores the moral power of kindness.
Rāma mourns Sītā’s absence and points to the fawns as witnesses to her loving presence in the forest.
Sītā’s tenderness and capacity to inspire trust; Rāma’s empathy toward all beings.
