The Words of Yama
तेषामपीह पितरः पितॄणां पितरस्तथा । तथा मातामहा यांति मातुर्ये जनकादयः ॥ १४ ॥
teṣāmapīha pitaraḥ pitṝṇāṃ pitarastathā | tathā mātāmahā yāṃti māturye janakādayaḥ || 14 ||
Ici même, leurs pères aussi—ainsi que les pères de ces Pitṛ—atteignent (le fruit du rite offert). De même, les grands-pères maternels l’atteignent également : ceux du côté de la mère, à commencer par son père et les autres.

It teaches that śrāddha/tarpaṇa offerings are not limited to one person: the merit and satisfaction extend through multiple generations, including both paternal and maternal ancestral lines.
In a Purāṇic framework, honoring Pitṛs is part of dharma that supports a sāttvika life; such disciplined dharma becomes supportive ground for stable Vishnu-bhakti, even when the verse itself is primarily ritual-focused.
It reflects Kalpa (ritual procedure) in specifying eligibility/recipients of offerings—clarifying that rites are directed to ancestors across paternal and maternal lineages.
