Adhyaya 30 — Madālasā’s Instruction on Household Duties and Naimittika–Śrāddha Rites
कुर्यात् पितॄणां त्रितयमेकं प्रेतस्य पुत्रक ।
पात्रत्रये प्रेतपात्रमर्घ्यञ्चैव प्रसेचयेत् ॥
kuryāt pitṝṇāṃ tritayam ekaṃ pretasya putraka |
pātratraye pretapātram arghyañ caiva prasecayet ||
Ô mon fils, on doit préparer trois (offrandes) pour les trois pitṛ et une pour le preta. Sur les trois vases —et aussi sur le vase du preta— on doit verser la libation d’arghya.

The rite acknowledges both continuity (the established pitṛ-line) and immediacy (the newly dead preta), expressing responsibility across generations and transitional states.

The separation of preta from pitṛs symbolizes an ontological transition: rites ‘stabilize’ the departed from liminality toward ancestral integration, even when full sapiṇḍīkaraṇa may not apply.
