Educational Q&A

The verse highlights norms of dignity and ritual-social purity within a household: a person being sheltered is assured protection from degrading or polluting contact (touching feet or leftovers), emphasizing respectful hospitality aligned with dharma.

In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, Queen Sudeṣṇā addresses a woman she is about to keep in her household, promising that the woman will not be required to touch anyone’s feet or handle leftover food, and that she will be accommodated according to her stated wishes and disposition.
