तद्‌ भीष्मवाक्यं हितमीक्ष्य सर्वे धनंजयाग्निं च विवर्धमानम्‌ | निवर्तनायैव मनो निदध्यु- दुर्योधनं ते परिरक्षमाणा:,अन्य सब योद्धाओंको भी भीष्मजीका वह कथन हितकर जान पड़ा; क्योंकि युद्ध करनेसे तो धनंजयरूपी अग्नि उत्तरोत्तर बढ़कर प्रचण्ड रूप ही धारण करती जाती, यह सब सोचकर उन सबने दुर्योधनकी रक्षा करते हुए अपने देशको लौट जानेका ही निश्चय किया

tad bhīṣmavākyaṃ hitam īkṣya sarve dhanañjayāgniṃ ca vivardhamānam | nivartanāyaiva mano nidadhyur duryodhanaṃ te parirakṣamāṇāḥ ||

Vaiśampāyana dit : Voyant tous que l’avis de Bhīṣma était salutaire, et comprenant que le feu de Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) ne ferait que s’embraser plus farouchement si l’on poussait la bataille, ils ne songèrent plus qu’à la retraite. Protégeant Duryodhana, ils résolurent de faire demi-tour et de regagner leur propre pays, choisissant la prudence plutôt qu’une guerre qui attiserait la ruine.
