Chapter 58: Arjuna’s Deployment of the Indra-Weapon
स तु लब्ध्वान्तरं तूर्णमपायाज्जवनैह्यै: । छिन्नवर्मध्वज: शूरो निकृत्त: परमेषुभि:
sa tu labdhvāntaraṃ tūṛṇam apāyāj javanaiḥ hayaiḥ | chinnavarma-dhvajaḥ śūro nikṛttaḥ parameṣubhiḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana dit : Ayant trouvé une ouverture, il se retira aussitôt, pressant ses chevaux rapides. L’armure et l’étendard du héros avaient été mis en pièces par les flèches les plus accomplies d’Arjuna, et lui-même était grièvement blessé ; aussi, saisissant l’instant, s’enfuit-il de ce lieu. L’épisode rappelle une éthique du champ de bataille : lorsque la capacité de combattre est irrémédiablement entamée, on choisit la retraite tactique afin de préserver vie et force pour un affrontement ultérieur plus conforme au dharma, plutôt que de courir à une destruction vaine.
