ततस्तु तां समारोप्य निबध्य च सुमध्यमाम् | जम्मुरुद्यम्य ते सर्वे श्मशानाभिमुखास्तदा
tatastu tāṃ samāropya nibadhya ca sumadhyamām | jambum udyamya te sarve śmaśānābhimukhās tadā ||
Vaiśampāyana dit : Alors ils soulevèrent la dame à la taille fine, la placèrent sur le brancard funèbre et l’y lièrent avec le cadavre. Puis, tous ensemble, ils levèrent le corps du mort et se dirigèrent vers le lieu de crémation.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights how easily human beings can commit cruelty when driven by suspicion or rigid custom, reminding the listener that dharma requires compassion and protection of those in danger, not merely the performance of outward acts.
A group of people place a woman onto the funeral bier and bind her together with the corpse, then carry the dead body toward the cremation ground, intensifying the peril and setting up the ethical crisis of the scene.
