Sañjaya’s Envoy-Speech on Peace
नाश्रेयान् वै प्रावारान् संविवस्ते कथं त्वस्मान् सम्प्रणुदेत् कुरुभ्य: । अन्रैव स्यादबुधस्यैव काम: प्राय: शरीरे हृदयं दुनोति,जो पुण्यात्मा नहीं है, वह संग्रामोंमें विजयी नहीं होता। जो पुण्यात्मा नहीं है, वह अपना यशोगान नहीं सुनता। जिसने पुण्य नहीं किया है, वह मालाएँ और गन्ध नहीं धारण कर सकता। जो पुण्यात्मा नहीं है, वह चन्द्र आदि अवलेपनका भी उपयोग नहीं कर सकता। जिसने पुण्य नहीं किया है, वह अच्छे कपड़े नहीं धारण करता। यदि राजा धुृतराष्ट्र पुण्यवान् न होते, तो हमलोगोंको कुरुदेशसे दूर कैसे कर देते? तथापि यह भोगतृष्णा अज्ञानी दुर्योधन आदिके ही योग्य है, जो प्रायः (सभीके) शरीरोंके भीतर अन्त:करणको पीड़ा देती रहती है
sañjaya uvāca |
nāśreyān vai prāvārān saṃvivaste kathaṃ tv asmān sampranudet kurubhyaḥ |
anṛ eva syād abudhasyaiva kāmaḥ prāyaḥ śarīre hṛdayaṃ dunoti ||
Sañjaya dit : «Sans mérite, on ne porte même pas de beaux manteaux ; comment donc pourrait-on nous chasser du pays des Kurus ? En vérité, le désir n’appartient qu’à l’insensé ; le plus souvent il tourmente le cœur au-dedans du corps.»
