उदयास्तमने संध्ये वेदयन्ती महद्धयम् । शिवा च वाशते घोरं तत् पराभवलक्षणम्,'सूर्योदय और सूर्यास्त दोनों संध्याओंके समय एक गीदड़ी महान् भयकी सूचना देती हुई भयंकर आवाजमें रोती है। यह भी कौरवोंकी पराजयका लक्षण है
udayāstamane sandhye vedayantī mahad bhayam | śivā ca vāśate ghoraṁ tat parābhava-lakṣaṇam ||
Sañjaya dit : «Aux deux crépuscules — à l’aube comme au couchant — un chacal pousse un cri effroyable, comme s’il annonçait une grande terreur. C’est encore un présage marquant la défaite prochaine des Kauravas.»
