Educational Q&A

The verse teaches dharmic hospitality: feed Brahmins and guests with pure, sanctified food (haviṣya) and, more broadly, offer excellent भोजन suited to each person’s taste—generosity guided by purity, respect, and consideration.

Vaiśampāyana is describing prescriptive conduct connected with different parvans/contexts: in the Śānti-parvan one arranges haviṣya-feeding for Brahmins; in the Aśvamedha-related context one provides superior meals pleasing to all; and at a rest-house one again feeds dvijas with haviṣya.
