Svargārohaṇa-parva Adhyāya 2 — Yudhiṣṭhira’s Inquiry for His Kin and the Vision of a Punitive Realm
करम्भवालुकास्तप्ता आयसीश्व शिला:पृथक् । लोहकुम्भी श्व॒ तैलस्य क्वाथ्यमाना: समन्ततः
karambha-vālukās taptā āyasīś ca śilāḥ pṛthak | loha-kumbhī ca tailasya kvāthyamānāḥ samantataḥ ||
Vaiśampāyana dit : « En certains lieux, des amas de sable mêlé de bouillie (karambha) brûlent d’une chaleur ardente ; ailleurs, d’immenses dalles de fer sont disposées à part. Et tout autour, de l’huile bout dans des chaudrons de fer. » La scène épaissit l’atmosphère de rétribution : la route à venir apparaît comme un pays de chaleur punitive et de tourment, rappel des suites de l’adharma et des fautes amassées.
