स्वर्गे दुर्योधनदर्शनम् | Duryodhana Seen in Heaven

Triviṣṭapa

दुर्योधनको ऐसी अवस्थामें देख उसे मिली हुई शोभा और सम्पत्तिका अवलोकन कर राजा युधिष्ठिर अमर्षसे भर गये और सहसा दूसरी ओर लौट पड़े ।।

vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca |

duryodhanaṃ tathāvasthaṃ dṛṣṭvā tasya ca saṃpadam |

śriyaṃ ca labdhāṃ saṃprekṣya rājā yudhiṣṭhiro 'marṣitaḥ |

sahasānyato nivavṛte bruvann uccair vacas tadā ||

na ahaṃ duryodhanenaiva sahitaḥ kāmaye lokān |

lubdhenādīrghadarśinā ||

(…yena vayaṃ sarvasuhṛdbāndhavān haṭhād yuddhe nihatyākhilāṃ pṛthivīm ujjhitavān; yo 'smān pūrvaṃ mahāvane bahu kleśam akārayat; yaś ca dharmaparāṃ nirdoṣāṅgīṃ patnīṃ pāñcālīṃ draupadīṃ sabhāyāṃ gurūṇāṃ samīpe 'karṣat…)

Vaiśaṃpāyana dit : Voyant Duryodhana en un tel état—considérant l’éclat et la prospérité qui lui étaient échus—le roi Yudhiṣṭhira fut rempli d’indignation et se détourna aussitôt. Puis, parlant à haute voix à ceux qui se tenaient là, il déclara : « Ô dieux ! Je ne désire pas ces mondes de mérite si je dois les partager avec Duryodhana, avide et sans clairvoyance : l’homme même par qui, poussés à une guerre obstinée, nous avons massacré amis et parents et dévasté la terre ; celui qui jadis nous fit endurer de cruelles souffrances dans la grande forêt ; et celui qui traîna notre épouse irréprochable, vouée au dharma—Draupadī, princesse de Pāñcāla—dans la salle de l’assemblée, devant les anciens. »

Educational Q&A

Merit and reward are not merely about reaching a ‘heavenly’ state; ethical integrity matters. Yudhiṣṭhira refuses a heaven that appears to honor the very agent of greed and injustice, asserting that association with adharma is unacceptable even if it comes with celestial pleasure.

In Svargārohaṇa, Yudhiṣṭhira is shown Duryodhana enjoying splendor in the heavenly realms. Outraged by the memory of Duryodhana’s crimes—war’s devastation, the exile’s suffering, and Draupadī’s humiliation—Yudhiṣṭhira turns away and declares he does not want such worlds if he must share them with Duryodhana.
