Vāmadeva’s Rājadharma: Norm-Setting, Counsel, and the Prevention of Rāṣṭra-Vināśa (वामदेव-प्रोक्तं राजधर्मम्)
जो राजा हृदयको प्रिय लगनेवाले न होनेपर भी गुणवान् पुरुषोंको प्रीतिजनक बर्तावद्वारा अपने वशमें कर लेता है, वह दीर्घकालतक यशस्वी बना रहता है ।। नाकाले प्रणयेदर्थान्नाप्रिये जातु संज्वरेत् । प्रिये नातिभृशं तुष्येद् युज्येतारोग्यकर्मणि,राजाको चाहिये कि वह असमयमें कर लगाकर धन-संग्रहकी चेष्टा न करे। कोई अप्रिय कार्य हो जानेपर कभी चिन्ताकी आगमें न जले और प्रिय कार्य बन जानेपर अत्यन्त हर्षसे फूल न उठे और अपने शरीरको नीरोग बनाये रखनेके कार्यमें तत्पर रहे
yo rājā hṛdayako priya laganevāle na honepar bhī guṇavān puruṣoṃko prītijanaka bartāvad dvārā apane vaśa meṃ kara letā hai, sa dīrghakāla tak yaśasvī banā rahatā hai. nākāle praṇayed arthān nāpriye jātu sañjvaret. priye nātibhṛśaṃ tuṣyed yujyetārogyakarmaṇi.
Vāmadeva enseigne qu’un roi qui, sans être lui-même aimable, sait gagner les hommes dignes et vertueux par une conduite qui les rassure et leur plaît, demeure longtemps dans la renommée. Il recommande en outre la discipline royale : ne pas rechercher des revenus hors de saison ; ne jamais se consumer d’inquiétude lorsqu’advient l’agréable contraire ; ne pas s’enivrer d’une joie excessive quand survient ce qui plaît ; et s’appliquer aux pratiques qui conservent la santé.
