राज्ञो वृत्त-गुण-संग्रहः (Conduct and the Thirty-Six Virtues of a King) / The King’s Code of Conduct
५-दीनता न लाते हुए ही प्रिय भाषण करे। ६-शूरवीर बने, किंतु बढ़-बढ़कर बातें न बनावे। ७-दान दे, परंतु अपात्रको नहीं। ८-साहसी हो, किंतु निष्ठर न हो ।।
saṃdadhīta na cānārya-viṃ gṛhnīyān na bandhubhiḥ | nābhaktaṃ cārayec cāraṃ kuryāt kāryam apīḍayā ||
Bhishma dit : « Qu’il parle avec douceur sans tomber dans une bassesse servile. Qu’il soit vaillant, mais non hâbleur. Qu’il fasse l’aumône, mais non aux indignes. Qu’il soit hardi, mais non dur. Qu’il conclue des alliances, mais jamais avec les gens sans noblesse. Qu’il ne cherche pas querelle à ses propres parents. Qu’il n’emploie pas comme espion celui qui n’est pas dévoué au roi. Et qu’il accomplisse ses desseins sans causer de peine — faisant ce qui est nécessaire sans opprimer. »
