Nāgendra–Brāhmaṇa Saṃvāda: Praśna-vidhi and Dharmic Approach on the Gomatī Riverbank

तब वे बलवानोंमें श्रेष्ठ दोनों दानव पुनः उत्तम वेगका आश्रय ले रसातलसे शीघ्र ही ऊपर उठे और ऊपर आकर देखते हैं तो वे ही आदिकर्ता भगवान्‌ पुरुषोत्तम दृष्टिगोचर हुए। जो चन्द्रमाके समान विशुद्ध

tataḥ te balavānāṃ śreṣṭhau ubhau dānavau punaḥ uttama-vegaṃ āśritya rasātalāt śīghram eva ūrdhvaṃ samutpetatuḥ | ūrdhvaṃ gatvā ca paśyataḥ—sa eva ādikartā bhagavān puruṣottamo dṛṣṭigocaraḥ | candramasa iva viśuddhaḥ ujjvala-prabhayā vibhūṣitaḥ gaura-varṇaḥ saḥ | sa tadā aniruddha-vigrahe sthitaḥ, amitaparākramaḥ bhagavān yoganidrām āśritya suptaḥ || ātma-pramāṇa-racite apām upari kalpite | śayane nāga-bhoga-āḍhye jvālā-mālā-samāvṛte || apāṃ upari śeṣa-nāgasya śarīra-śayyā nirmitā āsīt, yasyāḥ pramāṇaṃ bhagavataḥ śrī-vigrahānurūpam | sā jvālā-mālābhiḥ samāvṛtā iva babhāse | tasyāṃ viśuddha-sattva-guṇa-sampanne manohara-kānti-mati bhagavān nārāyaṇaḥ suptaḥ | taṃ dṛṣṭvā tau ubhau dānava-rājau aṭṭahāsaṃ kṛtvā uccaiḥ uccaiḥ jahasatuḥ |

Alors ces deux Dānavas, les plus éminents parmi les puissants, rassemblant leur plus grande vitesse, s’élevèrent promptement hors de Rasātala. Parvenus au-dessus et regardant autour d’eux, ils virent de leurs propres yeux le Faiseur primordial, le Bienheureux Puruṣottama—pur comme la lune, paré d’une clarté rayonnante et d’un teint clair. En ce temps-là, il se tenait dans la forme nommée Aniruddha; le Seigneur à la vaillance incommensurable reposait endormi, entré dans le Sommeil yogique. Sur les eaux se trouvait une couche façonnée à la mesure même de son corps, posée sur les replis du serpent Śeṣa, riche de ses capuchons, et semblant ceinte de guirlandes de flammes. Sur cette couche dormait le Seigneur Nārāyaṇa, doté d’un sattva sans tache et d’un éclat ravissant. À sa vue, les deux rois-démons éclatèrent d’un rire sonore et moqueur.

Educational Q&A

The passage contrasts divine serenity and purity (Nārāyaṇa resting in yoganidrā, established in viśuddha-sattva) with the arrogance and derision of the Dānavas. Ethically, it warns that pride can make one mock what is truly supreme, while dharma is aligned with recognizing and revering the cosmic order rather than ridiculing it.

Two powerful Dānavas rise from the netherworld Rasātala and, upon reaching the upper region, directly behold the primal Lord Puruṣottama/Nārāyaṇa in the Aniruddha manifestation, asleep in yogic sleep on a couch formed by Śeṣa upon the waters. Instead of responding with awe, they laugh loudly in mockery.
