Atithi’s Direction to the Nāga-sage Padma at Naimiṣa (अतिथ्युपदेशः—नैमिषे पद्मनागोपाख्यानप्रस्तावः)
अथ विश्वरूपं नन्दनवनमुपगतं मातोवाच पुत्र कि परपक्षवर्धनस्त्वं मातुलपक्षं नाशयसि नार्हस्येवं कर्तुमिति स विश्वरूपो मातुर्वाक्यमनतिक्रमणीयमिति मत्वा सम्पूज्य हिरण्यकशिपुमगात्
atha viśvarūpaṃ nandanavanam upagataṃ mātovāca—putra kiṃ parapakṣa-vardhanas tvaṃ mātula-pakṣaṃ nāśayasi? nārhasi evaṃ kartum iti. sa viśvarūpo mātur vākyaṃ anatikramaṇīyam iti matvā sampūjya hiraṇyakaśipum agāt.
Puis, lorsque Viśvarūpa fut allé au bois de Nandana, sa mère lui dit : «Mon fils, pourquoi fortifies-tu le camp adverse et détruis-tu le parti de ton oncle maternel ? Tu ne dois pas agir ainsi.» Tenant les paroles de sa mère pour infranchissables, Viśvarūpa la salua avec respect, prit congé et se rendit auprès d’Hiraṇyakaśipu.
अजुन उवाच
A parent’s instruction is presented as ‘anatikramaṇīya’—not to be overstepped—showing filial duty as a strong dharmic obligation, even when it clashes with one’s political or factional alignments.
Viśvarūpa is confronted by his mother in Nandana-grove; she reproaches him for aiding an opposing faction and harming his maternal uncle’s side. Accepting her command as binding, he honors her and then departs to meet Hiraṇyakaśipu.
