Śvetadvīpa-varṇana and Śāstra-pravartana (Śānti Parva 322)
शकुनानामिवाकाशे मत्स्यानामिव चोदके । पद यथा न दृश्येत तथा पुण्यकृतां गति:
śakunānām ivākāśe matsyānām iva codake | padaṃ yathā na dṛśyeta tathā puṇyakṛtāṃ gatiḥ ||
Bhīṣma dit : «De même qu’on ne voit pas dans le ciel les traces des oiseaux, ni dans l’eau les pistes des poissons, ainsi la marche et la destination ultime de ceux qui accomplissent le mérite — les vertueux et les sages — ne peuvent être suivies ni connues par l’observation ordinaire.»
